PEORIA, Ill. – If there is a warrant out for your arrest, you won’t get a call about it.
That’s what the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office is saying after several reports from residents of a new scam circulating the area.
Residents say they were contacted by a “Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant” regarding a warrant for their arrest. The alleged Lieutenant then tells the person to make arrangements for a payment and to bring it to the Peoria County Jail to avoid arrest.
The scammer will also use names of actual officers in the Sheriff’s Office or other Peoria County employees to try and be more convincing.
The Sheriff’s Office says they will not call you if there’s a warrant in your name. They add that they will never ask for immediate payment by phone, demand payment in gift cards, or send a text message with a link to make payments.
