LEWISTOWN, Ill. – Residents in Fulton County affected by Tuesday’s storms are beginning the process of cleaning up and rebuilding.
The National Weather Service says the tornado that affected Bryant, Lewistown, and Canton is rated at an EF-3. The twister had winds up to 160 MPH, had a path of nearly 19 miles, and a width of 600 yards. There were four injuries related to that tornado.
Another tornado that affected Table Grove had peak wind speeds of 110 MPH, a path of nearly two miles, and a max width of 200 yards.
Farmer Dennis Turner tells 25 News that he suffered damage to his home, along with multiple tractors and four of six grain bins.
He says he took cover in the basement.
“You could hear the noise, your eardrums felt funny. We’re gonna be okay,” Turner said.
In Bryant, Donald Brown and his wife took cover in the basement. He says the sun room was ripped off his home, along with multiple windows being shattered.
He says the town is receiving support from out-of-towners looking to help clean up.
“Spoon River College baseball players, about 12-15 of them, with chainsaws started hauling stuff away, and they start cutting and piling,” Brown tells 25 News. “They done a good job.”
The Salvation Army is also on the scene, and Sarah Nottle of the organization says they have not needed to set up an emergency shelter.
“Because everyone either took people in or they had family close by enough that they were able to go to,” Nottle tells 25 News.
The Salvation Army is providing residents who need it with food, shelter, and resources.
