PEORIA, Ill. — Crittenton Centers in Peoria is raising awareness for the health and safety of children.
They held the 15th Annual Pinwheels for Prevention on Thursday, in recognition of April being child abuse prevention month.
After the Dr. Cindy Fischer Kids First Award for Excellence was handed out, those who attended got to help create a garden of pinwheels, including Peoria Mayor Rita Ali, who was the first to plant one.
Jeff Gress, President and CEO of Crittenton Centers, told 25 News that the garden is a visual representation to help change the way we think about child abuse prevention.
“It tells me that people understand the importance, that they believe in what we’re trying to do here as an organization, but also what their role can be in the community to protect children,” Gress said.
Gress added that The pinwheel became the Crittenton Centers’ symbol for child abuse awareness in 2008, because of its playful nature that also speaks to kids.
