MOROCCO, Ind. – A Mackinaw man died in a motorsports crash this past weekend in Indiana.
The Newton County Sheriff’s Office responded to the US 41 Motorplex at around 5:30 P.M. on reports of a fatal crash involving one vehicle.
An investigation determined that a 1996 Mustang driven by a 41-year-old from Mackinaw was performing a solo time trial run on the track.
After crossing the finish line, the vehicle lost control for an unknown reason and crashed into a guardrail, then became airborne and landed in a wooded area.
The car also caught on fire as a result of the crash, and led to the man’s death.
The identity of the man has yet to be released.
In a statement on social media, US 41 Dragstrip offered condolences to the man’s family and friends.
“We ask for all our racers and fans to join us in prayers to them and all that we’re [sic] affected by this tragedy. We also want to thank everyone that helped us during and after the accident, we cannot express how much your efforts meant to us.”
