PEORIA, Ill. – Firefighters were called to an apartment complex near Knoxville and Lake early Saturday morning in Peoria, on reports of smoke in the building.
Peoria Fire Battalion Chief Tom Sander says crews arrived just before 3:30 a.m., initially finding heavy smoke, then fire in a first floor unit on N. Knollridge Road.
Residents in the three-story building were evacuated, two people on the second floor were helped down a ladder.
The person living in the apartment where the fire started escaped out a bedroom window after being alerted by another resident. They were displaced, but secured temporary housing.
A fire investigator determined the cause of the fire was unattended cooking.
No injuries were reported. Damage was estimated at $100,000.
