PEORIA, Ill. – One home is destroyed, and one home is damaged, after two fires in an eight-hour period in Peoria, ending early Saturday morning.
Peoria firefighters responded to one that officials say was caused by a discarded cigarette butt in a residential complex on McReynolds Court near John H Gwynn, Junior Avenue just prior to 6:30 p.m. Friday. Some smoke could be seen, but officials say no one was home at the time. The discarded cigarette was found in a chair.
Minimal damage was reported, and the resident displaced is now expected to stay with family members. Damage was estimated at $1,000
A second fire near Bigelow and Forest Hill resulted in the house being a total loss.
Firefighters say that one started after 1:30 a.m. Saturday, with one of the two occupants being hospitalized with serious injuries.
Crews stayed for two hours putting out hot spots in the home. The cause of that fire is still under investigation. Damage was estimated at $135,000.
