PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria is putting new limits on tobacco sales, with higher fees and the elimination of unregulated synthetic nicotine.
Peoria City Council on Tuesday night approved three measures; one eliminating a 90-day moratorium on getting a tobacco license, the others add limits and higher fees on stores that sell tobacco and vaping products.
The filing fee increases from $100 to $150, and the license itself will now cost anywhere from $500-$1,000, depending on the store’s volume of sales, which has to be reported each year.
Stores that see higher sales of other products, beyond nicotine-related items, are capped at 125.
The cap is now 15 stores that derive more than 50% of sales from nicotine products.
Council also voted that only FDA approved synthetic nicotine can be sold in Peoria stores.
