PEORIA, Ill. – A Peoria County jury has found a St. Louis man guilty in the stabbing death of a Peoria doctor from three years ago.
Peoria County State’s Attorney Jodi Hoos says Robert Ely, 57, was found guilty of First Degree Murder on Wednesday in death of Dr. William Marshall.
Ely was also found guilty of residential burglary and theft. Several paintings, valued at more than $200,000, were missing from the home.
Hoos says Marshall was found by a home healthcare worker, and identified Ely as being in the house before the murder took place. She says a nearby homeowner surveillance camera also picked up an image of Ely, driving away in a white pickup truck with one of the paintings. The paintings were later located in a storage locker connected to Ely.
“This is a case that shook our community because of its brazen nature. We had a 92-year-old man beaten and stabbed to death in his own home during broad daylight. I credit the hard work and dedication of all the police agencies involved with this and my attorneys who were able to bring justice to Dr. Marshall’s family.” Jodi M Hoos, Peoria County State’s Attorney
Sentencing for Ely is scheduled for April 25th.
