PEORIA, Ill. – Some cuts are likely coming to a part of Peoria Public Schools that Superintendent Sharon Desmoulin-Kherat calls her “baby.”
Kherat told the District 150 school board Monday night what’s called the state’s “R-3 Grant” – or, “Restore, Reinvest, and Renew” – has been cut by about 75 percent, negatively impacting the district’s Wraparound Center.
That included cuts to an attorney that provided legal help at the center, and to partnerships with FamilyCore and the Hult Center for Family Services, among others.
Kherat says the district has been trying to look for alternatives, to no avail.
“You can’t even collaborate because it throws you out,” said Kherat. “Most of the money will be going to Chicago. That’s how that was written.”
Board members urged sitting down to look at ways to try and mitigate the damage.
“I don’t want us to lose sight of, in 2018, why the Wraparound Center was so relevant. It’s because it’s a total full service,” said Paris McConnell, board member. “What’s in there now is working. It has been working.”
The grant was for nearly $900,000. Now, it’s just over $400,000.
McConnell and other board members want to see if there’s anything that can be done to keep the Wraparound Center status quo.
