PEORIA HEIGHTS, Ill. – Officials in Peoria Heights are celebrating 17th District Congressman Eric Sorensen’s announcement earlier this week of nearly $1 million in federal funding coming to them to build a new water main.
The over $950,000 worth of work will be targeted along Route 29 and Galena Road, and according to a statement, ground will be broken “in the second half of this decade.”
Mayor Mike Phelan calls it a “critical investment” in one of the main roads in the village.
“Congressman Sorensen, to his enormous credit, recognized the importance of lining up the funding for this project now, in advance of the nearly $70 million rehabilitation and reinvention of that highway through Gov. Pritzker’s capital program, said Phelan, in a news release.
There is currently no timeline for the project.
“Central Illinois is a special place, and it is my job to make sure my neighbors can live and grow a family in communities that are sustainable for future generations. One of the ways I can make sure that happens is by bringing tax dollars back home to support middle-class families,” said Sorensen (D-East Moline), in a news release.
