SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – A number of the candidates who expected to win Republican primary elections Tuesday for statewide or Congressional office, for the most part, did.
Woodford County Chief Sheriff’s Deputy Dennis Tipsword defeated repeat candidate Don Rients to be the party’s nominee for the 105th District seat in the Illinois House by about a three-to-one vote.
While not officially called. Chris Balkema Tuesday night declared himself the winner of the GOP primary for the 53rd District State Senate seat.
Balkema so far largely defeating three opponents to be the party for the seat Gibson City’s Tom Bennett is vacating.
And, former Dixon Mayor Li Arellano is his party’s nominee for the 37th District seat Senator Win Stoller is vacating, defeating both Tim Yager and Chris Bishop.
Judge Joe McGraw was projected to be the winner in the 17th Congressional District GOP primary, over Milan farmer Scott Crowl. At one point the margin was three-to-one.
McGraw will face incumbent and Rockford native Eric Sorensen in November’s election.
In the 16th District, incumbent Darin LaHood was unopposed, and so far doesn’t have a Democratic opponent in November.
That could change however, if Democrats slate an opponent.
