BRACEVILLE, Ill. – Illinois State Police are asking for the public’s help in their investigation of a January hit-and-run that claimed the life of a Galesburg woman who was trying to help another driver trapped inside their vehicle after a rollover crash.
23-year-old Destiny Dixon, a mother of two young girls, was one of several motorists who stopped to help the driver, according to ISP.
On the night of January 1, 2024, Illinois State troopers responded to a fatal hit-and-run crash around 7:30 p.m. on I-55 northbound near Braceville, in Grundy County.
Dixon was standing near the vehicle that had rolled over when another vehicle drove through the crash site at a high rate of speed, hitting her and a male subject. Dixon later died from her injuries.
Illinois State Police say the driver who hit Dixon fled the scene going northbound on I-55, and was last seen in the area of I-55 and I-80. The vehicle is described as a dark gray 2010-2011 Mitsubishi Endeavor.
ISP says the vehicle sustained significant damage to the front left corner, left side headlight and left side mirror.
