PEORIA, Ill. – The Tenth Judicial Circuit Court is warning about a reported scam in Peoria County regarding missed jury duty.
In a statement Friday, the court says there’s been reports of people posing as representing the Peoria County Jury Commission over the phone, attempting to collect a fine in lieu of arrest for missing jury duty.
Anyone who receives such a call should not provide personal information over the phone, and if possible, document the number calling them.
Chief Judge Katherine Gorman says the commission will never contact people via phone call, nor threaten them for missing jury duty without proper notification, or ask for money.
“Jury duty is a vital civic responsibility and should be taken seriously by all citizens,” Gorman said.
Gorman adds it’s a crime for anyone to falsely represent themselves as a court official.
Anyone who may have been a victim of such a scam is asked to contact police, the sheriff’s office, or the Illinois Attorney General’s Office.
