PEORIA, Ill. – The proton beam at the OSF HealthCare Cancer Institute now has a name.
OSF announced on Wednesday that it has received a $2 million gift from Polly Barton, specifically focused on proton beam therapy. The gift will now name the area containing the beam as the Glen and Polly Barton Beam.
The institute’s founding director Dr. James McGee says the gift will help enhance the ability to provide proton beam therapy to patients.
“The ‘Barton Beam’ will be a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of philanthropy in advancing cancer treatment and research. Polly Barton’s support allows us to push the boundaries of medical innovation and improve the lives of those battling cancer,” Dr. McGee said.
Polly’s husband, Glen, was a former Caterpillar CEO who passed away from cancer in 2016. Polly served on the executive steering committee for the Cancer Institute.
OSF also announced Dr. Huan Giap as medical director of Proton Therapy for the institute. In a statement, OSF says Giap has experience with nuclear engineering, biophysics, and medical science. Giap also holds six copyrights and patents for innovative medical devices.
