PEORIA, Ill. – Saving lives with donated ambulances, fire engines and SUVs.
That’s the mission of U.S. Ambulances for Ukraine, a non-profit that got its start two years ago in Peoria.
OSF HealthCare’s Vice President of Government Affairs, Chris Manson, figured out a way to send an ambulance overseas to help first responders in the war-torn country in 2022.
The idea came after his young daughter asked how they could help the people of Ukraine.
Manson tells WMBD’s “Greg and Dan Show”, 77 emergency vehicles have been sent to Ukraine to date.
“Sixty ambulances, eight fire engines, multiple SUVs, even a wheelchair-accessible bus. And, these vehicles, like the fire engines, are often the first response on missile strikes in different parts of Ukraine, the ambulances are with military units all over Ukraine…and with hospitals and fire departments,” Manson says.
U.S. Ambulances for Ukraine is currently preparing to send three more donated vehicles to Ukraine, but doesn’t have enough money right now to send all three.
“You’re talking about $9,000 per vehicle. I’ve raised enough money for one of the fire trucks and one of the ambulances,” Manson says.
