PEORIA, Ill. – The cause of death for an eight-year-old girl from Missouri who died last month after a medical emergency on a flight diverted to Peoria has been revealed.
Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood says Sydney Weston died from complications of chronic primary adrenalitis in the setting of multiple infections that included Strep and Enterovirus.
He says Weston also had duodenitis, an inflammation in the first part of the small intestine, as well as a thyroid gland inflammation.
Harwood says all those combined suggested she had an underlying autoimmune disorder.
He says a complete autopsy and a review of medical records helped lead to the determination.
Weston and her family were on a flight from Joplin, Missouri to Chicago on June 12th when it was diverted to Peoria International Airport.
An initial autopsy on Weston was inconclusive.
