PEORIA/WASHINGTON, Ill.- The Peoria-area will have two representatives at this weekend’s Illinois High School Association girls’ basketball state finals.
Peoria Notre Dame and Washington both won their Supersectionals Monday night to advance to state at CEFCU Arena in Normal.
The Lady Irish will look to go back-to-back in Class 2A, after they defeated Stillman Valley, 67-56, at the Manlius Bureau Valley Supersectional.
PND will play in the first 2A semifinal on Thursday, against Mt. Carmel. The Aces defeated Kankakee Bishop McNamara, 61-42, at the Tolono Unity Supersectional.
The Lady Irish won its first state title last year, on a last-second basket by Emy Wardle against Nashville. A title game rematch is possible, after Nashville also advanced to state by defeating Camp Point Central, 58-41, at the Vandalia Supersectional.
Washington returns to state for the first time since the first girls’ basketball state tournament in 1977, after needing overtime to defeat Sterling. The Lady Panthers beat the Warriors, 58-54, at the Rochelle Supersectional.
They will battle Chicago St. Ignatius College Prep at 6:30 P.M. Thursday in the first 3A semifinal.
