PEORIA, Ill. – Unattended cooking is being cited as the cause of a Peoria apartment fire Monday morning.
Peoria Fire says crews responded to an activating smoke detector at Brandywine Crossing just after 6:45 A.M.
Firefighters did not initially find smoke or fire, but noticed an odor of smoke and forced a door open. A pot on the stove was found on fire, with the fire spreading to the cabinets.
Crews put the fire out but found no one in the apartment.
The building’s residents were evacuated due to smoke spreading throughout the building, but returned a short time later.
One person was treated on scene.
Damage is estimated at $5,000.
