PEKIN, Ill. – The final performance for a Pekin Community High School show choir is on the horizon.
25 News reports that the “Noteables” will be discontinued at the end of the school year, with the program facing low student involvement and funding cuts.
Superintendent Dr. Danielle Owens says the choir has had a long history of being a competitive opportunity for students. But the changes are aimed at trying to reinvigorate the choir program at PCHS. Owens noted the school also offers madrigals and a cappella as part of the choir program.
Senior Daelyn Dills, who has been part of the choir for years, found out about the news through a teacher. She says the news left her in tears.
“Noteables isn’t just a show choir, we are a family. A lot of us who didn’t have friends before, made friends through Noteables,” said Dills.
Dills says the “Noteables” is a program that is held dear to several students’ hearts, as well as adults who were in the program.
Three students and a parent spoke at a school board meeting earlier this month to try and save the program. One of those students was senior Athena Keltner.
“We basically begged them to continue this forward. They basically went, alright, here is our email, email us with all your questions. So we did, and they avoided almost every single one of our questions,” said Keltner.
An online petition to save the group has received more than 500 signatures.
