ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – Police in Missouri have released a video with information regarding the officer-involved fatal shooting of a homeless man with a last known address in South Peoria.
31-year-old Darius Kennedy was the victim in the November 21st incident at Lambert International Airport
In a video posted Friday, St. Louis County Police Public Information Supervisor Vera Clay says the video is not meant to draw any conclusions, only to inform the public.
“Because this is still an active investigation, our goal is to give you the clearest picture possible based on the facts our detectives have gathered so far,” Clay said.
The video uses footage from police scanners, video from two police bodycams, as well as surveillance video from the airport.
Captain Tony Cavaletti of the St. Louis County Police Department narrates the video incident. The video alleges that Kennedy was asked to leave the airport by officers from the St. Louis Airport Police Department.
Kennedy allegedly didn’t comply with multiple commands from officers. Kennedy could be heard in the video saying “If I leave, I’m going to get killed.”
Kennedy then allegedly moved towards officers with a knife that was produced from his sleeve. A taser was used unsuccessfully on Kennedy, then four shots were fired at him.
Cavaletti says officers rendered aid to Kennedy, but he died from his injuries at the scene.
Cavaletti says the St. Louis Airport officer who reportedly fired the shots was a 43-year-old with two years of police experience. He says there were no injuries to any officers.
A knife attributed to Kennedy was reportedly recovered by police, and shown in the video.
