PEORIA, Ill. – With “very high” levels of influenza reported across the state, OSF Healthcare’s Dr. Brian Curtis is urging everyone to get their flu shot.
While it’s still possible to catch the flu after being vaccinated, Curtis stresses that the shot is very effective at keeping you out of the hospital.
To avoid spreading the flu, Curtis suggests washing your hands frequently, coughing into your elbows, and keeping your hands away from your eyes and nose.
Curtis says if you come down with the flu, stay home and away from people until you no longer have a fever for at least 24 hours…without any medication.
WMBD’s “Greg and Dan” asked when is it safe to return to work after catching the bug?
“Usually, we say 24 hours fever-free, with no Tylenol or Motrin, no medication, is when you’re allowed to come back,” Curtis says.
Flu season typically ramps up between December and February, and lasts until May, so there’s still plenty of time to get the flu shot to protect yourself and those around you.
