UPDATE (5:15 P.M.):
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office confirmed Wednesday that Nichols is the father of the injured infant.
Investigators determined Nichols was the sole person caring for the baby during the time the injuries occurred. Physicians reported the baby suffered multiple brain bleeds, bleeding within the eyes, brain swelling, and rib and leg fractures consistent with non-accidental trauma.
A detention hearing is scheduled for Thursday, January 8.

PEORIA, Ill. – A Peoria man is facing felony charges after a 2-month-old baby ended up in the hospital in critical condition.
20-year-old Jaravion Nichols was taken into custody on Tuesday after being indicted by a Peoria County grand jury on one count of aggravated battery to a child.
Police were called just after 5 p.m. on December 12 to a Peoria hospital where the baby boy arrived with severe head trauma.
Doctors told police that the trauma did not appear to be accidental, and a criminal investigation was initiated.
The baby also suffered several fractures throughout his body, bleeding on the brain and retinal hemorrhaging, according to police.
On Tuesday, January 6, Nichols was arrested on a warrant in the 2000 block of NE Jefferson Avenue, then taken to the Peoria County Jail.
Nichols was held without bond while waiting for a detention hearing.
An investigation is ongoing.
