PEORIA, Ill. – Drivers are seeing a slight drop at the pump in Peoria, even as the national gas prices are higher.
GasBuddy says the average price of gas in Peoria has dropped two cents a gallon in the last week, averaging $2.83 on Monday, up less than a penny from a month ago, but over 37 cents lower than this time last year.
GasBuddy’s cheapest gas in Peoria on Sunday was $2.57.
AAA Illinois’ average price in the Peoria/Pekin metro area was $2.85 and the state average price of gas was $2.97.
Meanwhile, the national average gas price has risen for a second straight week, jumping 7.5 cents a gallon to $2.84 (GasBuddy data) or $2.88 (AAA data).
Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, attributes the national climb to several factors, including oil prices rising above the $60-per-barrel mark, geopolitical tensions leading to new sanctions on Iran’s oil, and the recent major winter storm impacting refinery operations and output.
De Haan also noted that demand for heating oil has boosted diesel prices, a combination that could push both gas and diesel prices higher in the weeks ahead
