PEORIA, Ill. – Prosecutors have filed charges against the man accused of shooting and injuring a Peoria County Sheriff’s deputy Saturday night.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office says 51-year-old Larry Bell was charged Monday with Attempt First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, Armed Violence, and Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine. Bell was also charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Repeat Felony Offender due to prior convictions in Kankakee County.
A detention hearing for Bell will take place on Wednesday.
The incident in South Peoria occurred just after 9:45 P.M. near South Western and Marquette, and injured 24-year-old Deputy Jack Evans.
Evans made a stop of a vehicle that Bell was reportedly a passenger in. Bell had allegedly got out of the vehicle and fled on foot after Evans returned with the occupants’ information.
During the chase, Bell allegedly fired multiple shots and struck Evans multiple times. Sheriff Chris Watkins says Evans suffered gunshot wounds to his legs and torso.
Bell was allegedly found hours later in an abandoned building in possession of 25 grams of methamphetamine. A handgun was reportedly recovered during a search warrant of the building.
