PEORIA, Ill. – Better late than never for early voting in Peoria County.
The Peoria County Election Commission announced that Tuesday will be the first day of early voting in the county, as well as vote-by-mail ballots being sent out.
Early voting began statewide last week, but Peoria County held off due to pending litigation regarding a Republican gubernatorial candidate. Tazewell and Woodford Counties moved forward with early voting on the first day it was available.
Executive Director Elizabeth Gannon says the delay was the right move, citing a desire to not create confusion, as well as saving taxpayer money.
“The decision to postpone was not made lightly, but we thought it was the best decision for Peoria County as a whole,” Gannon said.
Gannon says early voting is open to any voter in the county, as long as they state their name and address. She adds that people can register to vote as well when they arrive to vote early.
The county says ballot drop boxes will be available, starting March 2nd, at the Peoria Public Library North Branch on Grand Parkway, and at Neighborhood House on S. Matthew.
