PEORIA COUNTY, Ill. – New initiatives by Peoria County Animal Protective Service are aiming to keep lost pets safe and sound until they return home.
The first is the establishment of two microchip scanning stations, with one at Tower Park in Peoria Heights and the other at West Peoria City Hall.
An individual who finds a lost pet can take them to one of the scanners and see if they are microchipped. If the pet is, their unique identification pops up to let them know where the pet’s home is.
The other program is the Finder to Foster program. The program lets those who find lost pets take care of them in their homes, until the pet can be reunited with its owner.
PCAPS Director Becky Spencer says both initiatives have a goal of trying to keep lost pets out of their shelter.
“The animal shelter takes in 6,000 animals a year here at PCAPS,” Spencer said. “Any effort that we can make to keep animals in their home, safe and sound where they belong, is really what we’re after.”
Spencer says the shelter can average about 20 lost pets showing up per day.
Spencer adds that those in the Finder to Foster program who take in a lost pet can get supplies and advice from PCAPS on how to care for them, until they return home.
