PEORIA, Ill. – The Peoria Civic Center was evacuated Thursday after a construction accident caused a gas leak.
A construction crew struck a large gas line feeding the building, according to the Peoria Fire Department.
Firefighters tested air quality inside and discovered gas had accumulated in the basement. The building was cleared as a precaution.
Crews shut down electricity to part of the structure to prevent a potential explosion. Ameren shut off gas service to both the Civic Center and City Hall.
Once firefighters ventilated the gas from the building, employees were permitted to return to finish their work.
The extent of damage and timeline for repairs has not been released.
