PEORIA HEIGHTS, Ill. (25 News) – Peoria Heights voted to continue a small office and retail project on Prospect Rd, in its downtown area, even after developers said they planned to downsize the original project proposal.
During the village’s board of trustees meeting this week, the board said that developers have reduced a proposed mixed-use building on the former Save-A-Lot property along prospect road from three stories to two.
Village leaders debated over whether the revised plans should have gone back through the zoning approval process. some trustees argued the smaller building represents a significant change from what was originally presented to the public.
“I am development friendly and I want to see investment continue in Peoria Heights,” said Sarah DeVore, a Village of Peoria Heights Trustee.
“However, our responsibility is not to developers but to the residents who have elected me and us, to ensure the process we established is fair, transparent, and consistently followed.”
The board voted unanimously to approve a tax increment financing agreement for the $12.5 million project, which is expected to include retail space, offices and bring about 80 jobs to the village, according to the economic development consultant working with the developers.
