PEORIA, Ill. – A tradition started in the 1940’s in downtown Peoria has been revived.
OSF Ministry Headquarters now occupies the building where the Block and Kuhl Department Store once stood.
OSF HealthCare’s Ryan Spain says after WWII and into the 1950’s, the store was famous for unfurling a giant American Flag around the 4th of July on the front of the building (facing Adams Street).
“OSF was honored to do the very same thing here, to memorialize the 250th anniversary of the United States of America. So, the flag is now flying, this time on the river side, facing out to the Murray Baker Bridge,” Spain says.
Spain tells WMBD’s “Greg and Dan” that OSF’s American flag is 86 x 50 feet, and was ordered to commemorate America’s 250th birthday, but also OSF’s 150 years of bringing healthcare to Peoria.
The flag weighs about 300 pounds and arrived Wednesday night, just in time for the 4th of July holiday.
Spain says he expects people on the Peoria Riverfront for Choose Greater Peoria Red, White and Boom, brought to you by I-3 Broadband, to use OSF’s giant American flag as a backdrop for their holiday selfies.
