PEORIA, Ill. – Throughout Illinois, and in the City of Peoria, personal fireworks are illegal.
“That being said, we are also aware that fireworks happen on a regular basis this week through July 4th,” Peoria Fire Chief Shawn Sollberger says.
The chief says regardless of the law, people will still buy illegal fireworks out-of-state, and shoot them off…sometimes resulting in serious injuries. Sparklers, smoke bombs, party poppers, snappers, caps, and snakes are legal.
“Our number one caution that we have for any parent is not allowing their children to handle fireworks. So, if we can at least start there, I think we minimize about 50 percent of our issues,” Sollberger says.
When it comes to sparklers, kids get excited and may not be aware just how hot they get…around 2000 degrees.
The Peoria Fire Department encourages everyone to leave the fireworks to the professionals. Choose Greater Peoria Red, White and Boom, presented by I-3 Broadband, are set to begin at 9:30 Saturday night on the Peoria and East Peoria Riverfronts. Learn more HERE.
