PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria residents have another option for dropping off household and medium-format batteries.
Peoria Public Works at 3505 N. Dries Lane is now taking batteries for disposal.
Batteries can also be taken to all of the Peoria Fire stations, the Peoria County Courthouse and Peoria County Health & Human Services building as part of the Battery Network.
The Battery Network accepts household batteries which include single-use like AAA, AA, C, D, 9V and coin batteries that power small devices like remote controls, portable radios, flashlights, toys and clocks.
Medium-format batteries are bigger than household batteries but smaller than full EV battery packs, like those found in electric lawn mowers, scooters, home medical devices and portable battery generators.
An Illinois law, the Portable and Medium-Format Battery Stewardship Act, took effect on Jan. 1, prohibiting household and medium-format batteries from being discarded in the garbage or recycling.
Peoria Public Works says when dropping off batteries, residents should bag batteries or tape the terminals before dropping them off to help prevent short circuits and reduce the risk of fires. This does not apply to alkaline or other non-lithium primary batteries under 12 volts.
