PEORIA, Ill. – They’re on their way…the St. Jude Memphis to Peoria runners, all 179 of them, along with their support staff have started the journey to Memphis and back.
“Well we’ve got 24 motor homes, 3 vans, a bus, 3 trucks and 2 trailers on the way down, plus a chartered bus full of supporters,” says St. Jude Runs Co-Founder Mike McCoy.
He tells WMBD’s “Greg and Dan Show” that St. Jude Runs has topped 2,500 runners this year, including all the satellite runners, for their 45th year…all raising money to find a cure for children’s cancer.
The St. Jude Memphis to Peoria runners will leave the St. Jude campus Wednesday, beginning the 465 mile trek back home.
Before they leave the hospital, McCoy says they’re getting a very special send off this year.
“For the first time, they’ve allowed all the patients, all the patients that are able to come, to meet with the runners at the Domino’s Events Center, where we’re going to have our send off,” McCoy says.
The St. Jude satellite runs begin Thursday in various communities throughout Illinois and St. Louis, Missouri. The satellite runs will arrive in Peoria Saturday afternoon.
To date, St. Jude Runs has raised over $94 million for cancer research.
The St. Jude Runners’ Parade is scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday.
The runners will converge on the Peoria Civic Center Saturday evening ahead of the St. Jude Telethon on WEEK-TV that begins at 6:30 p.m.
