PEORIA HEIGHTS, Ill. – There’s a new way for all kids to enjoy play at Peoria Height’s Endres Park.
The Peoria Park District unveiled a new all-inclusive playground on Thursday. The playground features cushioned flooring, a new swing set, accessible pathways, an ADA accessible drinking fountain, and new safety fencing. The playground was also moved to a shaded area adjacent to the park shelter.
District Board President Robert Johnson says it’s important for kids with disabilities to have the ability to create memories of their own on playgrounds.
“We want those kids also to be able to come out, have memories, be with their families, look at all the picnic tables and shelter, so they can come and enjoy as well,” Johnson said.
Johnson says Glen Oak and Trewyn Parks, as well as West Peoria, have similar playgrounds, with future projects planned at the district’s other parks.
The project cost around $315,000, with around a quarter of it funded by a grant from PlayCore and the Illinois Park and Recreation Association.
The park district says the former playground equipment at Endres Park will be repurposed as part of the Peoria Zoo’s goat habitat.
