PEORIA, Ill. – The Peoria Historical Society has been selected as a recipient of an Illinois Humanities 250th Gift, recognizing its decades of work preserving and sharing local history.
Illinois Humanities awarded a total of $250,000 to 50 history, heritage, archival and cultural organizations across Illinois as part of a statewide initiative commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States.
Executive Director Elizabeth Klise said the recognition reinforces the importance of local history.
“This recognition reinforces the importance of local history and inspires us to continue connecting our community with the people, places, and stories that have shaped Peoria and Illinois,” Klise said.
The Peoria Historical Society has been preserving and celebrating the history of the Peoria area since 1934. The organization operates two historic house museums, maintains a collection of more than 70,000 artifacts, and offers educational programs, tours and community events.
