WASHINGTON, Ill. – This Sunday (September 6), the City of Washington marks the 25th anniversary of 9/11.
That day, Fighter Pilot Heather “Lucky” Penney and her commander were ordered to intercept Flight 93, bound for the nation’s Capitol at the hands of hijackers onboard the plane.
“When they were scrambled and activated, they had no time for weapons, no time for missiles. Their job was to bring down that plane, using their own F-16, and sacrificing their own lives to bring down the plane,” says David Houseworth, Chairman of Washington’s September 11 Remembrance Ceremony Committee.
Flight 93 crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after the crew and passengers took control, preventing the plane from reaching Washington, D.C.
Houseworth tells WMBD’s “Greg and Dan Show” that Penney’s story is one that everyone needs to hear.
Penney will be at the Veterans Memorial helicopter in Washington Park on Sunday at 4 p.m.
The ceremony will also feature The Gibson Girls, who will perform the National Anthem and “God Bless America,” along with musical selections by Bagpiper Scott Whitman.
The Tazewell Area Ceremonial Team and Tazewell Military Rights Team Honor Guard, Washington Fire Department, American Heritage Girls, Washington Police Department and Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office will also take part in the remembrance.
