PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria’s Republican Congressman says he feels safe with vote-by-mail “at this point” but does have some concerns.
17th District Congressman Darin LaHood (R-Dunlap) of Dunlap says the problem is mail-in balloting is different in each state, which could lead to potential errors and corruption.
LaHood says proper oversight can help reduce those mistakes, as the foundation of a democracy is people having faith in the election system.
“It’s incumbent upon us to have people on the ground, to make sure we’re watching and monitoring with the proper oversight,” LaHood said. “That means federal prosecutors, that means the FBI, making sure it’s run the right way.”
LaHood says he’s voted for the SAVE America Act multiple times in the House, which he says would review the mail-in ballot system.
Earlier this week, Tazewell County Clerk John Ackerman reassured that vote-by-mail is safe and secure, after an article printed by the Peoria Journal Star raised concerns on a federal level. LaHood says he has not seen the whistleblower report that prompted the article, nor does he believe there is a lot of panic with vote-by-mail at this time.
