PEORIA, Ill. – (25 News) – More than 70 local veterans returned to Peoria International Airport Tuesday night after a day trip to visit memorials built in their honor in Washington, D.C.
The journey marked the 40th Greater Peoria Honor Flight.
Individuals, families and fellow veterans packed the terminal to welcome the returning veterans. For many of the veterans, it was the first time they had received a welcome-home crowd of this size.
“To see this at the end of the day, I don’t know how you make a better day. It was a fantastic day and thank you everybody,” said Wayne Rowe, a veteran.
The trips are free for veterans, funded entirely by donations and local volunteers.
This was the third Greater Peoria Honor Flight this year, and organizers are planning future flights for more area veterans.
