PEORIA, Ill. (25 News) -Archbishop Fulton Sheen was honored this week on the floor of the U.S. House by Rep. Darin LaHood, (R-Dunlap), who is Catholic.
Ahead of Sheen’s beatification in St. Louis on Thursday, Sept. 24, LaHood recalled Sheen’s Central Illinois roots.
Sheen was born in El Paso and later raised in Peoria where he was ordained and served as a priest.
LaHood recognized Sheen for his work against communism during World War II and then for Sheen’s later work in broadcasting, where he reached people across the nation through his show “Life is Worth Living.”
“For the people of Central Illinois, this is an especially meaningful moment,” said LaHood.
“Fulton Sheen was one of our own, a product of Central Illinois. All of his formative years were spent there. And he carried with them the faith and values he first learned in the Peoria area.”
Sheen’s intercession is credited with a miracle that occurred in 2010, when a young James Engstrom, son of Travis and Bonnie, came back to life after being stillborn and not breathing for 61 minutes.
