EAST PEORIA (25News Now) – East Peoria police are investigating one of the city’s Flock cameras that was vandalized.
25News discovered the camera early Friday morning on Springfield Road near the Dollar General store.
The pole was cut, and the camera was lying in the grass. Pieces of the camera were found in the grass and in the street.
An officer passing by stopped at the scene and spoke with 25News.
He said it appears someone sawed the pole overnight from Thursday into early Friday morning.
Deputy Chief Jason Ernst said the department launched an investigation around the time the officer spoke with 25News. Due to the investigation, he said he could not provide further comment.
In October, East Peoria City Council unanimously voted to expand its use of Flock Safety license plate reading cameras.
Elected officials believe the technology’s ability to fight crime offsets concerns about potential misuse and privacy violations.
The council agreed to buy 10 more cameras from Flock in addition to the 18 the city already has. The cost to taxpayers is $156,500 over five years.
It’s not clear who vandalized the camera.
