PEORIA, Ill. – A 10-year-old boy accused of bringing a gun to a Peoria primary school was ordered to home confinement.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office says a judge on Thursday denied the prosecutor’s request for detention of the boy, citing a lack of criminal history and the boy’s age.
The boy was released to his parents, on conditions of GPS monitoring and to not possess any weapons.
Police responded to Charter Oak Primary School on Wednesday morning, where the boy was already detained and the gun secured.
Prosecutors say a student allegedly told a teacher the boy had shown him a gun in the bathroom. The boy reportedly denied having it to the principal, but later allegedly handed over a gun that was hidden in his pants. The weapon was reportedly not loaded at the time, but a magazine with six rounds was allegedly found in the boy’s classroom.
Police say they talked to three students who had reported seeing the weapon. One student stated the boy had allegedly made a threat to shoot another student.
The boy’s parents reportedly told police they believed the gun belonged to the boy’s grandparents and was taken from their home.
Prosecutors say the boy allegedly claimed an unknown male forced the gun into his backpack.
