SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Among the myriad new laws taking effect in January: changes to state law regarding breaks for workers.
Rules under the “One Day Rest in Seven” act will be clarified for workers who don’t follow a traditional “Sunday through Saturday” work week.
“The law does require that (employees are) provided at least 24 hours of rest within a seven consecutive day period,” said Marina Faz-Huppert, Illinois Department of Labor, “and that they’re afforded bathroom breaks; and, if they’re working longer…like a 12 hour shift, they’re entitled to another 20 minute break.”
Faz-Huppert says businesses must post a sign informing workers of updates to the law, with samples on the IDOL website for download.
“(Employers) also need to know about posting requirements,” said Faz-Huppert. “And, if they’re found in violation of these requirements, there could be penalties, depending on the size of the business, and personally as well.”
A webinar is scheduled for Tuesday, December 13, to discuss the changes, along with an additional increase in the state’s minimum wage from $12 to $13. CLICK HERE to register.
