CHICAGO, Ill. – Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul says his office led what he called “bipartisan negotiations” with 17 other states leading to a multi-billion dollar settlement with two pharmacy chains over allegations connected to the opioid epidemic.
Raoul says he’s reached a $10.7 billion settlement with Walgreens and CVS for, what he says, was their failure to appropriately oversee dispensing of opioid drugs at its pharmacies.
“The opioid epidemic has tragically affected too many Illinois families that have experienced addiction or even the death of a loved one,” sad Raoul, in a news release. “This $10.7 billion settlement with Walgreens and CVS builds upon the important progress we’ve already achieved with previous settlements, but more importantly, it holds both companies accountable.”
In addition to the settlement, which other states must still approve, also includes court-ordered requirements while a compliance program where independent pharmacist review of prescriptions, training, and other thigns.
This comes on top of a recent $3 billion national settlement with Walmart.
