PEORIA COUNTY, Ill. – An autopsy was completed Monday on the remains of a man who went missing in March of 2021 in rural Peoria County.
The Peoria County Coroner’s Office says 34-year-old Gabriel Cook suffered a gunshot wound to the head and likely died instantly.
Allen Schimmelpfennig was convicted of First Degree Murder and Concealing a Homicidal Death in May of 2023 in relation to Cook’s death.
Cook’s remains were found Saturday afternoon on Pottstown Road by a man clearing brush from his property.
The coroner’s office says Cook had items on him that were used to identify him, such as serial numbers from orthopedic plates and screws attached to one of his joints.
The coroner’s office says the next step is to have a forensic dentist compare dental records.
