SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Libraries across Central Illinois are receiving state grant funding to help expand services, improve facilities and enhance security.
The Illinois Secretary of State’s Office announced Tuesday that more than $27 million is being distributed to public and school libraries across the state through several grant programs.
Among the largest local recipients is the Peoria Public Library, which will receive more than $192,000. Other notable awards include:
Peoria County
- Alpha Park Public Library District (Bartonville): more than $41,000
- Chillicothe Public Library District: more than $21,000
- Dunlap Public Library District: more than $11,000
- Peoria Heights Public Library: more than $10,000
- Brimfield Public Library District: more than $6,500
Tazewell County
- Pekin Public Library: nearly $54,000
- Washington District Library: more than $41,000
- Fondulac Public Library District (East Peoria): more than $34,000
- Tremont District Library: more than $8,000
- Creve Coeur Public Library: more than $8,000, plus nearly $11,000 in Equalization Aid
Woodford County
- Illinois Prairie District Public Library (Metamora): more than $37,000
- Eureka Public Library: more than $11,000
- El Paso District Library: more than $8,000
According to the Secretary of State’s Office, the grants can be used for books, digital resources, internet access, programming, building improvements and security upgrades. Some libraries also qualified for Equalization Aid, which provides additional funding to communities with lower property tax bases.
The statewide funding includes more than $22.6 million for public libraries, nearly $2.8 million for library security projects, $866,953 for library construction and accessibility improvements, and more than $1.3 million for public school libraries.
